Just as the thread title says. I'm starting to wonder if I might have repressed masochistic tendencies that are coming out this way Tongue If you're wondering what brought this on...well I came across the "I am a...Ask me anything" thread on reddit by Cody Wilson the guy behind Defense Distributed. Here is a little section of what I saw.

Quote
Ayjayz: What gives anyone the right to say what another person should or shouldn't have?

R_Jeeves: Majority. That's how democracy works. If the majority of us say that everyone has equally restricted access to guns or has to follow the same rules of gun ownership, then that's our right to say so and enforce it. That's how democracy works. Doesn't matter what you as an individual want if everyone else disagrees. Not arguing for or against guns, just stating the obvious about the system of governance our society uses.

AgoristTeen1994: And that is why you are a dumbass. After all if the Majority of the people in a country, and let's say a large majority 80% say a minority, such as an ethnic minority should be exterminated within the nation's borders does that make it moral? What if it's a representative democracy, or what is more commonly called, a republic. After all Hitler and the Nazi Party were originally democratically elected into power, albeit though the process Germany had at that time, rather than the one America as....but they were still democratically elected. Just because the majority of people believe something does not in any way make it true. After all 200 years ago the majority of people in the U.S. though that blacks weren't human, and that they should be the PROPERTY of whites. Does the fact that the majority thought that, make it correct? And when you say majority, what percent of the population constitutes a majority? And how do you count the population, the voters? After all in the U.S. only about half of the people are registered to vote, and only have of those registered actually do it. That sure as hell doesn't sound like a majority to me, even if every damn vote was for the same option.

Of course even if you ban a certain group of firearms that doesn't mean much. The criminals don't particularly care. And if you were to say ban handguns, or fully-automatic firearms, or even semi-automatic firearms, the gov't will still have them, and you can sure as hell bet that they will use them to enforce laws.

R_Jeeves: (quoted my above post EXCEPT for what I said about the practicality of banning certain kinds of guns and then gave his reply)
And this is why you're a complete fucking idiot.
Morality is subjective. If you don't realize that, I can't help your retarded ass understand why it is that democracy isn't always the best way to run things but that IF WE ARE TO BE A DEMOCRACY the only way to have things work is to run by majority rule.
The rest of your comment is mindless drivel written by a freshman in college trying to prove something to the world about how politically knowledgeable you fucking aren't.

So yeah. I'm starting to wonder if A.) much as I'm loath to admit the possibility he is right. or B.) I'm showing a masochistic streak by debating with statists who are also delusional assholes. Personally I'm leaning more toward B.

He isn't right. I used to get frustrated whilst debating the Faithful but now I find it amusing.

Where did this conversation occur? I'd like to read the full text, if possible, before I start throwing my opinions around possibly injuring some nearby bystanders.

Well I don't find it amusing. At least not when it's someone who starts flinging insults like a monkey flings sh*t.

That's what makes it funny, instead of refuting anything the Statist like the creationist fall back on ad hominem attacks. Why? Because they are full of shit.

I recently had a "debate" where the faithful continued to say I was crazy because I said that the US didn't have a two party system. I then proceeded to site example after example where the Republican and Democrats copied each other. In the end I was told that I was stupid and crazy.

It's funny because they can't win. So they just try character assassination.

This is why Statism is faith just like religion.

He did not rebut or agree with a single point you made!

Understand that you got him to think and that is what's needed. I know this because it always is paid back in anger and fuck-you's. Otherwise he would just ignored you. He knows his position is weak and immoral but he has bathed himself in that position and it will be a meal of eating Crow for him to wash it clean. I bet he dislikes Crow and probably never tasted it yet.

It is amazing how the simplest things can be the hardest for people to comprehend... "Democracy; When two Wolves and a Sheep sit down and decide what is for dinner." I would guess he disconnects himself from his own suffering and deals with being a slave by believing morality is subjective upon him. Which with how many are raised so damn inconsistently I can see why someone would think the world is that way. But it's not.

Mother should I trust the government?

Oh where do I start.

Quote
Majority. That's how democracy works.Except we're not a democracy. We're, supposedly, a representative constitutional republic. The Founding Fathers went to great lengths to set up a government that's not like a democracy. Besides democracy is flawed. It's mob rule in a sportscoat, polling a lynch mob, organizing society by an informal logical fallacy; argumentum ad populum. If the majority of us say that everyone has equally restricted access to guns or has to follow the same rules of gun ownership, then that's our right to say so and enforce it. Kind of like how it wasn't until 1990 that a majority of Americans saw interracial marriage as alright? The majority was 30 years late on accepting the laws overturning interracial marriage bans. That's how democracy works. Two wolves and a lamb voting for dinner? Doesn't matter what you as an individual want if everyone else disagrees. So bullying? Not arguing for or against guns, just stating the obvious about the system of governance our society uses.

The Constitution was set up to where it helped protect the individual. It failed obviously but that's what it was suppose to do.

Do we limit one's freedom of speech because it might offend or hurt the majority? No.
Do we limit one's religious beliefs because we don't agree with them? No.

Why? The individual is the one being protected.

It's hard for some people to understand the idea of free association. Some people tend to drift in selfish directions. I think you asked a question with an obvious solution more than an obvious answer. Just stop. You will never convince someone of that nature to see things any way other than their own. Find a more productive way to use your energy. Examples: anything.

Free association is a selfish desire. Society is not created because of the whim of a deity or of a collective sub concious. Society is created because of the efficiency of the division of labour.

If you don't start out with calling them a dumbass, that helps. Although in the end they can't comprehend the arguments anyway, most of the time.
