What I would like to know is that if roads were privatized, would we even still be driving cars today? Or would there be a better mode of transportation.

When I was really small, around when I was 7-9, I wanted to be a spy and work for the CIA. Now I see how terrible the agency is, along with all other government agencies.

Even though I'm an anarchist, I love war/spy movies still. I have seen every James Bond movie, and I am an avid fan. I think most war movies are also anti-war movies. One of my favorite movies is Apocalypse Now. It's an amazing war movie, but it just shows you how ridiculous war is.

I would much rather they make lots of entertaining war movies rather than actually going out and starting war. I also don't think that making war movies would make people more in support of killing lots of other people in other countries.

That underwater hotel is truly incredible. Would love something like that. I am also very interested in Seasteading!

In addition to Seasteading, I'm also interested in space colonization. I hope to see that in my lifetime.

We need to get someone on TED Talks, talking about the concept of freedom.

Boring.  I would rather see the topic of anarchy.

Same thing as far as I am concerned.

Yes, but most people who are for freedom are statists (minarchists, constitutionalists, etc.).  The rest of the people have a perverted idea of the definition of freedom.

Since your father is a neo-con then you can show him this site http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking; it is a ranking of the freest -pertaining to economic freedom- countries in the world.  It is made by the Wall Street Journal and The Heritage Foundation; both of which are loved by neo-cons, so your father should respect the ranking.

Lol, it's the same ranking that I provided.

Not sure why Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged) is there.  Ayn Rand hated libertarians.

Or, maybe, if congress had the courage to ban guns completely, James Holmes would not have shot up that movie theater. He got all of his guns legally. No getting around that.

Look at other democratic, similar countries. Japan has banned handguns, and they have low gun crime. Europe in general has very little guns, and they have lower gun crime than the US by far. They had one psycho go on a killing spree. The US has one every few years.

Guns are dangerous. No one needs 6000 rounds of ammo. Or assault rifles. Or even shotguns. Guns do nothing good for average citizens. This tragedy would not have happened in Japan.

Remember, a gun in the home is 22 times more likely to kill a family member than an intruder. Is all that risk worth it just so you can defend yourself from an imaginary government threat?

A few facts:

a) 1 in 2 people in Switzerland own a gun.  Their crime rate is the lowest in the world.

b) Every single mass murder in the USA, with the exception of one, has been in a gun free zone.

c) Banning guns will not prevent the criminals from owning or acquiring them.

d) Carrying a gun around gives an average citizen peace of mind and the ability to defend themselves.

Anyone have any advice for me on how to deal with my neo-con dad? We got into one of our oh so common debates on government (keep in mind I'm still in the anarchist "closet") when he said one of the most disgusting things I've heard him say: "America's the freeist country in the world."

If this is freedom, kill me now.

I'd love to convert him over to our side, but to be honest, I've never really converted anyone aside from my insanely apathetic friends, which was an easy task. I doubt he'd read any books that were anti-war or anything like that. I just gave him my copy of Liberty Defined with the "Empire" chapter bookmarked. Maybe that could help his warmongering ideals.

Show him the Freedom Index (http://www.freetheworld.com/).  The US is actually 10th freest in the world.  Some countries before the US: Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Chile.

Really though, conservatives are the worst when it comes to the freedom movement.  It will be almost impossible to "convert" him.

Rent seeking. Unable to do a cost-benefit analysis.

Those reasons are why the EPA is no good.
28  General Category / General Discussion / Re: You need the state because of... on: August 07, 2012, 05:05:50 PM
The government creates unintended consequences, however I would not say that it modifies behavior or habits.

Drugs are illegal, people still do drugs.  Killing people is illegal, people still kill people.  xx is illegal, people still do xx.  Behavior has not changed.

Roads used to be privatized, and are privatized in some parts of the world.  Heck, France, one of the most socialistic countries in the world, has privatized roads still.

Maybe the speed on roads is too high when the government is setting them which is one reason why car deaths are so high?  Privatizing roads could decrease costs in terms of time, money, and lives.

He is confusing government with law.  You don't need the government to have laws (to know not to rape, steal, kill), the same way you don't need religion to have morals, a college degree to be educated, or a license to know how to drive.

We need to get someone on TED Talks, talking about the concept of freedom.

Boring.  I would rather see the topic of anarchy.  It might not seem radical to us, but the idea of anarchy is radical to 97% + (in my estimate) of the population, and TED Talks are usually radical or really interesting ideas.  I recommend Peter Leeson, he is one of my favorite talkers on anarchy.
