Title: Bypassing the "kill switch"
Post by: wgreen on January 31, 2011, 08:19:25 AM
Does anybody have any thoughts on a kill-switch-proof internet.  I have been looking at articles like this:  http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Communicate_if_Your_Government_Shuts_Off_Your_Internet

Any thoughts on these?

It seems like the Ham radio-type solution is most promising (the "packet radio" approach), but I'm no expert.  I guess that would mean getting a Ham radio *ugh* permit.

I definitely wouldn't put it past this government to shut down the internet, but they'd have to shut down the phone lines too. That's a surefire way to lose legitimacy. Human kind has never been able to roll back technology that it's created. Once the cat is out of the bag, there is no going back.

I predict that the Egyptians will get their internet back shortly.

That's a good way to think about it. The more dependent we are upon it to make the economy go, the more serious people will take this attack on their freedom. It's a more dangerous move the more technologically advanced the society is. That being said, I'd like to have decentralized internet right now anyways !  ;)

They have shut down phones.

A few weeks later I saw in the news that the fed's were looking for a way to implement the ability to shut them down whenever and wherever they wanted.
