How long does it take to wipe a hard drive using the single pass method? How about for a 700GB hard drive?

I'd imagine at least a minute or two (depending on how good your processor is). But I'm not an expert by any means.

My processor is an Intel Quad Q8200.

The reason I ask is because I have seen such a variety of answers on the internet on how long the entire process takes. I have seen people say that it takes about 8 hours for a 500GB hard drive. While at the same time, others have said it takes them 72 hours for the same size hard drive. One individual said that DBAN works at a 20MB/s speed. Another said it took them 24 hours to wipe a little 20 GB hard drive.

If anyone has used DBAN before, how long did it take for you?

The reason I ask is because I do not want my computer unusable for more than a day. If so, I'd rather just buy a new hard drive.

Well, let's do some math.

500GB/25MB/second=20,000 seconds.

20,000 seconds = 5.5 hours.

I tried to randomly write to a 1TB USB drive. One would think from this calculation it would be about 11 hours, but no. It ran for 5 days and was not finished. So I don't think this calculation is completely valid.

I went ahead and used DBAN on both my computer and my brother's.

My computer took about 5 hours to wipe my hard drive:
6GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
750GB Hard Drive

My brother's computer took about 2 hours:
1GB RAM
Intel Pentium D
150GB Hard Drive
