I've gone ahead and started up an IRC channel for us on:

irc.rizon.net
#DailyAnarchist

I can grant the necessary powers whenever people register with the server. For those that have never used IRC I will try and dig up a decent guide on how to get started. I also put a bot in the channel, but I still have to properly configure it.

Well, based on my limited amount of research, IRC channels are difficult to maintain. I don't really have the know how to do it, but I'm not going to stop the community from keeping it maintained.

Any reason why you picked the rizon network?

I don't know the first thing about IRC based channels either, so an education would be very helpful.

This could just be my ignorance but it seems like I have to register seperately to comment on the stories and in the forum; it would be great if this could be fixed.

I believe I read that was by design.  I would bet it is due to using different systems for the different parts of the site, rather than having to build them all himself.

Yes, it's a real bummer, believe me. There is no bridge between the software I use for the forum(SMF) and the software I run for the blog(Wordpress).

I think only Drupal has a blog/forum feature, but even that isn't so hot. Originally, I wanted the site to be similar to Daily Paul, but the more I think about it the more I feel it, too, has serious limitations. A standalone forum like this is fairly popular, for a reason.

There are ways of tying them together manually. But you would need knowledge of each of the software packages you are using and their databases.

Maybe some map to find out the general area people are in.  Allow members to go click on the nearest city or town.  Maybe someone will find another member nearby.

Google Maps does allow you to do this. You can create your own maps and mark locations on it. I think you can share them too. There might be other "free" tools to do something like that as well.

I was hoping for a community map, not just one for me.  That's the same program I was thinking of.

@Seth: I would be interested to see you complete the question in the FAQs "What is Anarcho-Capitalism?" The article you link to is an excellent source (it was one of the first articles I looked to when I first discovered the term), but it is quite lengthy. It would be nice to have a succinct summary of what anarcho-capitalist's, and even just plain anarchist's believe.

I use to run an IRC channel.  For a guide to get people logged in, try this out.

You can encrypt pidgin for secure IM's.  I haven't looked at how/if that works for IRC.  The program works on multiple platforms.  I think they have a Mac version under a different name.

There are a couple problems with an IRC channel.  They tend to stop a lot of posts from happening, and issues are repeated more often since new people to the channel won't be able to see what has already been said in the past.

Also, it tends to be a lot about waiting for others to get online or not be idle. I think we could benefit from organizing discussion nights on IRC, instead of just idling in the channel. We would:

  • Pick a set time/date to start a discussion
  • Pick a topic or a few topics to discuss
  • If there are a lot of people and it gets messy we could have someone moderate the discussion
  • We could have someone log all the chat and later post it here on the forums for those that missed it.

I think this would be a good addition to the forum activity. Giving us a chance of more actively discussing a certain topic. We can even pick a topic that expands further on a certain forum post or article that was posted here on the Daily Anarchist.

Weekends would be ideal for this as we try to accommodate different timezones. I'm UCT+1 when there isn't summer time/daylight savings, so thats a hefty 9 hour difference with the west coast of the US.

Maybe you could add a gold/silver price ticker.  As it continues to climb, people will see how little value their paper money has.
