Just got this video from a friend of mine. Amazing. Relevant based on the recent discussions of evolutionary psychology, peaceful parenting, and biological determinism.

Interesting lecture. I'm kind of pissed he ended it when he did. I want to know how to get one's consciousness to override one's subconscious. I know somebody who I think has a "fear of failure" because of their parents' raising them with negativity, and I'd like to help them overcome it.

There were a couple of conclusions he made throughout the film that I thought were off. The major one is when he talks about how growth is inversely proportional to protection. The more you protect, the less growth there is. But then he gives you this equation:

Survival = growth/protection

I don't know how he got that. The equation should have looked like:

growth = 1/protection. Survival doesn't even enter that equation, so I don't know why he stuck it in there. If we assumed his equation of:

Survival = growth/protection

then one's survival approaches infinity as one's protection approaches zero. But I cannot go along with that. If it weren't for protection, silly little things would wipe us out early and our survival would approach zero.

I think he really oversimplifies the whole relationship between growth and protection, to be honest. Plus, he never really addresses the issue of aggression. Does one who was programmed to be highly protective have a proclivity towards aggression as well, or do they not correlate at all?

Otherwise, it was a very interesting lecture. Thanks for the rec!

Good catch on that.

There's another lecture he gives with a friend of his where they get into altering the subconscious from the subconscious, because you can't change a subconscious thought pattern with a conscious one, you can only block it, which requires constant effort or heavy medication, which are the entire focus of the psych profession these days. These do not change the thought patterns or achieve change. They just bury it for the time being. I'll try to dig it this presentation up.

Personally, I'm a student of Richard Bandler and John Grinder. I have a Grinder lecture on "Achieving Human Excellence" that I will post over the weekend. Powerful stuff. The freedom he exhibits when playing with ideas is very impressive. A lot of fun! Their technique and approach is similar to the one Lipton's friend uses ... tho Bandler and Grinder are a bit more formal in their methodology.
