I've not heard it put in quite those terms, but I'm a cultural imperialist so I'm not really sensitive to those things.

Josh, check your imperialist privilege.

Also: The code word is "Haram".

I checked it.  It's amazing.

There exists a continuum of cultures ranging from miserable, destructive nightmare cultures all the way to happy, constructive, mentally safe ones.

In my opinion (which coincides with reality nicely), cultures which deny education to women, or glorify child abuse are inferior to cultures that respect all genders equally and treat children with kindness and love.  Whenever I bump up against people participating in an inferior culture, I try and educate them about the harm they are causing.  At the very least I try and make them aware of some of their problems.

I don't threaten violence against idiots who willfully participate in a rape culture, but I do try to influence them to respect others.  I lead by example with friends and family.  Ask me about the time I changed some minds about child abuse.  (They used to be OK with it, and now they are not.)  I'm kind of a cultural imperialist that way.

I'm not going to kidnap a woman who is about to get forced into an arranged marriage and made to raise a litter of humans, but I will help her defect in any way I can.

Violent behavior is unacceptable even if it is a part of your culture.  I will ridicule you if, for example, you think tradition is a good reason for giving a baby an irreversible, unnecessary cosmetic surgery.

[sarc] OMG, you think some cultures are better than others!??! You must be racist! [/sarc]

Yeah, I'm not a tradition worshiper myself either...not in any sense.

If you guys want to have a laugh, take any intro sociology class at a American University. Cultural relativism is a fun topic.

I'm with Josh in that if you want to subscribe to a culture that cuts off your soft parts go for it (my birth culture does) but I'll have nothing to do with it.

Taking a step back, a lot of accepted cultural stuff is insane. The Brit's royalty worship, American flag worship, lots o' Muslim stuff.  Fuck, even Santa Claus.  Which is institutionalized child lying.  Somehow not lying to your kids when they're young and impressionable is seen as denying them a childhood.

Nuts.

Once you cut away all the bullshit, July 4th, Easter, Christmas.  It makes it a lot easier to see yourself as a human being and not as a "Amerikan" or whatever.  Its a big step towards being a Citizen of the World and being okay with bailing on "our" country.

Not sure where I like better. But when I was in Mexico, people seemed way more happy than Amerikans.

May I recommend the Central University of North Texas.

Why is not lying to your kids better than lying to your kids?  Why does that make a culture superior?

You also give people hang-ups about drinking coffee.  But that's ok.  Those people needed it.

So about that time you changed some minds about child abuse?
