Anarchist Alaska

Low population, cold, well armed, and populated with 13,000 some alaskans who don't want to be part of the US anymore. Now think about the possibilities for anarchism in the state. With it's mountains, cold climate, and relatively libertarian population, an anarchist insurgency could basically fight the US military indefinitely (if the afghans, a group that have basically just emerged from the fifth century, at least technologically, politically, and culturally can do it with just 10,000 people, well armed and angry libertarians in a rugged climate probably can too).
While Somalia could be a great place to create freedom (no real threats to liberty there, except maybe Israel), Alaska has the anger, the location, and the mountains to wage a violent and revolutionary war for anarchy. In alaska, cold winters, and rugged geography could create hell for US soldiers fighting there, thus giving an insurgency the home-team advantage.

I'm from Alaska
I plan on moving there when I get the chance.
Loose gun laws, cheap land, no taxes, and a several thousand dollar check from the government.
What's not to love!
You don't happen to be affiliated with the AIP? (alaskan independence party)

I am in Alaska. I am leaving in June.
Federal control is already very tight here:
http://lewrockwell.com/berwick/berwick23.1.html
Alaska is this idiotic dichotomy of "independent living" (bullshit) meets state socialism (the true nature of people here).
Plus the climate blows. Everything is harder to do here than elsewhere because of the short summers and long winters. There are people I know here who love it because they have embraced the winter, and in that case it is the right place for them (wide open spaces, etc, whatever), but if you want to make something of yourself by participating in productive society, it's a massive step backwards to come here. Lots of room for squatters cabins tho.
The AIP is a localized protectionist nationalist movement most of whose members believe that foreigners and corporations are the problem and that "we Alaskans" own all the resources in "our" state. It's just localized socialism ... and very combative socialism at that. Totally stupid.
Oh, I forgot to mention the military culture here. It will make you physically ill if you have any sort of anti-war bent. There's a church in the town I'm in that put up on their lighted sign, "Nuke em till they glow then shoot em in the dark!" after 9-11.
Also, you can't fight for freedom. That's a very naive and "Jonesian" idea (but then I repeat myself). Freedom is a state of mind. Well armed angry "libertarians" are the least free people I have ever met, and there are a lot of them here. The state doesn't need to lock them in a cage, they've already done it to themselves within their own mind. Their fear and insecurity seeps out their pores giving them a unique emotional stench that keeps anyone who is reasonably balanced from paying attention to them.

Alaskan independence is mostly romantic bullshit. It's true a lot of people live closer-to-subsistence lifestyles, more so than the average American, but the economy is almost completely dependent on the government. Oil + government + tourism is probably 90% of the economy here.
You can find libertarians here just like you can anywhere (apparently there are a lot of Alaskans on this forum, somehow) and you could create a community. But you can do that anywhere. I personally would choose a nicer climate and will likely be leaving in a couple years.
I agree with David on the consequences and futility of armed rebellion. Some guy associated with the sovereignty movement was arrested for alleged conspiracy to kill State Troopers in my town. The general response of the population wasn't of enthusiastic support, or even cautious skepticism but rather complete rejection and disassociation from "fringe nut jobs" like him. (I personally don't support violent action like that anyway, regardless of whether or not that was his true intent.)
I understand the urges that would lead you to come to Alaska, but unless you are coming for the climate and Alaskan lifestyle (dog mushing, hunting, freezing your balls off, etc.), you're better off going to New Hampshire and chilling with Seth and the other Free Staters. Just my opinion.

Another Alaskan reporting in.
Largely, David & Script have it right.
The military is idolized, the state is verbally reviled by the "independent" types, but lovingly embraced when it comes time to acquire funding.
Calling this population "libertarian" is a titanic misnomer.
Also: Long cold winter, short sleep ruining summer & support our troops stickers on nearly every vehicle.
Run far away, young infowarrior.

This thread made me happy, then got me depressed. When's that libertarian man-made island thing going to come into effect?

North Dakota falls in with Alaska too. I was hoping the people would be more independent when I got here. However, most I have encountered idolize the military (airforce base here in Minot) as well as any other form of republican tyranny.
I'm going to take Seth's advice in the near future =)

The Dao of Revolution is not to shoot troopers, but to wait for troopers to shoot each other when the state collapses.
