I got a standard issue marines hand to hand combat handbook that i borrowed from this crazy militant anarchist who got it from who knows where. It shows you how to break somebody's elbow, throw them on the ground, and kill them in about 10 seconds. Some techniques are almost sick how effective they are. But its damn good for self defence.

That is the stuff to have.  I considered joining the military a long time ago, just to get access to that kind of thing.

In what scenario would you ever actually use something like this?  SHTF?  It seems like in any sort of "normal" situation you will lose in court if you take extreme measures like this regardless of the issue of self-defense.  Also, the people most likely to aggress against you physically are the police and there's no way you will get away with self-defense against the police.

I'd say running away is usually the best idea, but if you're really stuck just use a gun.

Anyway this may be the book victim was talking about:

Shit happens.  Violence is all too common.  I don't know someone without a story of an attempted mugging, or some sort of violence.

Been mugged once, three guys wanted my mobile phone. Didn't really resist, didn't think it was worth the chance of bodily harm. In the end they ended up returning my mobile phone to me, I guess the mugging was more of an opportunistic thing and they changed their mind or something :S.

I'm not sure if any possession is ever worth the risk of bodily harm. Even if I felt I had like a 75% chance to take out my mugger I might still just be submissive. It's all about risk assessment. The best self-defense is avoidance, when that is an option.

Perhaps I'm sheltered.  I've never had to deal with violence against me and don't know many people who have.

Agreed, which is why I moved to New Hampshire.

I'd never use it in a regular scuffle, but if i feel that my life is in danger, I could care less what the courts say.

A little like that, but shorter and only about "swiftly and violently eliminating your opponent" Its code FMFM 0-7 Close combat and hand to hand fighting. It was printed in 1993

Having a black belt in both kung fu and brazilian jiu jitsu, as well as a 3-1 record in MMA, it's been my experience that the best type of self defense is situational awareness. Constantly scan your surroundings for possible threats and avoid them at all costs. I also carry a Ruger LCP .380 wherever I go. I always tell people that if I have to put my hands on you something has gone horribly wrong on my end, or I've fired all of my rounds. I do recommend trying to find a good MMA gym and do some sparring. Most people are not comfortable being hit or hitting others, so just getting some practice in a safe but stressful situation can do wonders for you. I don't believe in most of the "lethal" techniques that teach you how to drop an attacker with one punch and kill him with just the right strikes. In a real fight shit goes wrong fast and adrenaline can make an attacker be able to withstand much more punishment than normal. Attack the eyes and throat, try to rip off ears, or simply go Hannibal Lecter and take a bite out of their face if you have to. No need for green beret, secret ninja stuff.

That might be exactly what the secret ninja stuff says.  That's why we want to see the secret ninja stuff.

It's important to look like you are aware as well, don't walk with your head down..scan everything. walk with a purpose like you know what your doing and where you are going.

In short, don't look like a victim.
