Too bad it looks like a step back in safety tech.  Common problem for sports cars though.

Like any engineering feat, designing a car is a matter of deciding upon and prioritizing objectives.  Minimizing weight is a simple and obvious way to increase fuel efficiency.
But if the car is truly modular, then you should be able to add more safety features to it, albeit at the cost of some of that fuel efficiency.

25 grand isn't bad for something that gets over one hundred miles to the gallon. I'm impressed.

Personally I would rather get a motorcycle or scooter at a fraction of the price if I am looking for mpg.

The only issue with a bike is that you don't have the same amount of safety that you get with a four wheel vehicle. Bike's are cool, but I like to be surrounded by metal.

Well, there are other issues.  Carrying capacity--how much groceries can you carry on a bike or scooter instead of a car?  Or passengers?

There's also the weather--biking in a heavy rain or snowstorm is not nearly as safe or comfortable as driving in an enclosed car.  A car makes a good temporary shelter, as you can sleep in it, if need be.  And lock things inside the car or trunk.  Darned difficult to sleep on a bike or scooter!

Sure, but you don't need a 25k car with supposedly high mpg for that either.

I was just saying if I was being cost conscience about mpg, I would buy a used motorcycle or scooter for 1-4k.

Looks like the Lotus Elise somewhat.

Weight reduction is nothing new but usually it's for performance. It's what made the McLaren F1 the fastest car in the world until the Veyron came along.

Motorcycles and scooters don't get anywhere near 100 mpg.

My buddy's motorcycle gets 45 or so.

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/content/120/yamaha_sport_scooter_home.aspx

Half of them on this page are near or above 100 mpg.   One of them gets 132 mpg.

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/content/115/yamaha_sport_street_motorcycle_home.aspx

All the dual purpose bikes on that page are over 70 mpg.

That is just one manufacturer.

Really I am skeptical of the car manufacturers claim of 104/114 mpg on an existing honda engine.  Better mpg than many motorcycles which are far lighter with less wind resistance.  We all saw how flawed the mpg testing is when the Prius came out.

They also point out that they have a five star rating.  Take it for what it's worth, but it's there.  Safety and weight/size--which are the main drivers for fuel economy--are not necessarily mutually exclusive.  Safety wise, size is mostly volume--space for crumple zones and such.  Weight itself isn't needed for safety provided the car can handle the bouncing a lighter frame gets.
